Work out the last details with Vivian.

Find a place to sleep.

Move your stuff.

Prepare the report of changes to be made in the sales department of the branch.

Think about what you want to do with your life.

Forget about Lia. But how can you forget her?

You will. Compartmentalise, compartmentalise. You can do it.

The rest will wait until I get better. Always adjust your list of goals if you need to. Life is not a smooth ride. There are always unforeseen events. Being flexible about your goals is the key. The important thing is to review this list regularly, otherwise you will be frustrated.

With a sad heart, I stand up. The boarding has started.

“Christele? It’s me.”

“Lia? You have a voice from beyond the grave. What’s going on?”

“I’m just...”

I’m falling apart. But I was prepared for this call. I didn’t want to tell her about Natacha... just to tell her the facts...

“Lia... Sweetie... What’s going on? Lia...”

“I’m here... I’m sorry, Christele. There was an incident last night...”

“An incident? Lia, are you okay?”

“Not too well. Dispancho sent his men to me yesterday afternoon, to make it clear that I had no choice. I told them to go to hell... and then Natacha came in, she distracted them... She really distracted them, as if she knew... and they left. Then two men broke into my flat last night... and...”

“Lia, breathe... Are you okay? Are you hurt? What happened to you?”

“They hit me. They made me understand that if I didn’t do it, they’d go after my dad... Natacha came in and... Oh God... She must have learnt karate, because in the blink of an eye she knocked out the two guys... Then one of them came to his senses and shot at us... she had time to throw me to the ground and tip the sofa over... and... and...”

“Breathe... Breathe... Keep going.”

“Then she jumped to the side and shot the man. She had a gun, Christele... a gun... and she killed a man in my flat... Damn it... Who is she?”

“What happened next?”

“The cops came, then the FBI took over. They questioned us for four hours and then we went home. Oh shit... Christele... why did I do that?”

“Why did you do what?”

“I asked her to leave, not to come back. I told her it’s over. Oh, Christele... I...”

I’m falling apart again.

“Lia, where are you?”

“At the hotel.”

“I’m on the first plane out,” said Christele.

And she hung up.

“Mia cara?

“Hi, Daddy.”

“Are you okay, mia cara?”

“No, Dad, I’m not okay. I don’t need to tell you why.”

“Mia cara? Don’t tell me Dispancho sent his men?”

“Yes, he did, Dad. They came yesterday afternoon and I told them to fuck off. And last night he sent two more to bully me, to make me understand that if I didn’t comply he would come after you.”

“That bastard! Mia cara, listen to me. You take your things and you get as far away as you can. You got it? I’m gonna handle this my way.”

“No, Dad. No. This is my mess to clean up.
